Hiking Water Safety Guide
A responsible backcountry water-safety guide for hikers, backpackers, and campers. Clear, cold, fast-moving water can still carry pathogens, and many waterborne illnesses come from contamination you cannot see, smell, or taste. Treating water is cheap insurance against illnesses that can end a trip.
The guide covers why treat backcountry water at all, what contaminants actually matter (protozoa, bacteria, viruses, sediment), the difference between filtration and purification, choosing a treatment method by destination, and cold-weather precautions for keeping a filter from freezing.
For most established backcountry trails in North America and Europe, filtration is generally considered sufficient. Add purification for international travel, water near dense human or agricultural activity, or any time you are unsure. When in doubt, purify or boil.
