How Much Water Should You Carry on a Hike?
Water is the heaviest thing in your pack. Learn how much to carry for any hike and how a portable filter lets you carry less between reliable sources.
A baseline, then adjust
A common planning baseline is roughly half a liter per hour of moderate hiking in mild conditions. Heat, altitude, exertion, and dry air all push that number up — hot desert hiking can double or triple it. Learn your personal rate on short trips before committing to long dry stretches.
Let the map decide
With a filter, you carry water between sources, not for the whole route. Mark reliable water sources on your map, note the longest dry stretch, and carry enough for that stretch plus a margin. On water-rich trails that can mean carrying a single liter; on dry ridges it can mean four.
Treat 'seasonal' sources with suspicion in late summer, and check recent trail reports when available.
Carry it smart
Split capacity between a bottle you can drink from while walking and a reservoir or soft bottles for bulk. Keep your filter accessible — a filter buried in your pack is a filter you will not bother using, and dehydration creeps up quietly.
