Why Your Filter Slowed Down — and How to Fix It
Troubleshooting a sluggish water filter, from the most common cause (a clogged membrane) to the airlocks and hose problems nobody suspects.
First suspect: a clogged membrane
The most common cause of slow flow is simple clogging. Backflush the filter (or clean the element, for pump filters) and retest. If flow recovers, adjust your habits: pre-filter silty water, let sediment settle, and avoid scooping near the streambed.
Airlocks and hose problems
Gravity systems slow dramatically when air is trapped in the hose or filter. Re-prime the system per the manual — usually by letting water push the air out before hanging. Check for kinked hoses, partially closed clamps, and a dirty pre-filter screen at the intake.
When slow means done
If thorough cleaning no longer restores flow, the membrane may be at the end of its rated lifespan or damaged by freezing. Filters are safety equipment: when cleaning stops working, replace the cartridge or the unit rather than pushing on.
